Introduction: Probiotics are supplements that contain live microorganisms with a beneficial effect on health. In the oral cavity, they modulate and reduce the pathogenic microbiota and are useful in the prevention of carious lesions and periodontal diseases. However, the knowledge of dental professionals about its application in pediatric and adolescent patients seems limited because it is not yet included in curricular contents. Objetive: To compare the level of knowledge about the application of probiotics for oral health in children and adolescents in a group of dentists. Method: An online questionnaire was applied to a convenience sample of 108 professionals who gave their consent for their answers to be included in the results, always keeping the confidentiality and anonymity of the data. The questionnaire was made up of 18 questions previously validated through a pilot study. The participants were classified as general practitioners or specialists, in addition to the level of knowledge according to the correct answers: high (13 or more), medium (9-12), low (8 or less). Results: 68% of the participants showed a medium level of knowledge. Only 16% knew the application in oral diseases prevention. The level of knowledge about probiotics was slightly higher for the specialists p>0.05. Conclusion: Although the evidence shows the benefits of probiotics in oral health, it is necessary to disseminate the evidence in this regard, for its correct use in preventive programs aimed at reducing carious lesions, as well as gingivitis in children and adolescents.
