Abstract

Oral habits are the main etiological factors causing malocclusions and/or dentoskeletal deformations, altering the normal development of the stomatognathic system as well as bone deformation. Therefore, early treatment of habits is important, avoiding these malformations. Lip sucking or cheilophagia is the harmful habit of biting the lips. The orofacial effects of lip interposition are upper dentoalveolar protrusion, lower incisor retroclination, hypotonic upper lip, hypertonic lower lip, lip incompetence, mentalis muscle hypertrophy, deep bite, mandibular retrognathism, and anterior open bite. Eliminate the habit of lip sucking. An 11-year-old female patient attends a dental consultation at the pediatric dentistry specialty clinic at the ENES León University, UNAM. with reason for consultation: general review. It is clinically observed brachycephalic, convex profile, the size of the mandible is smaller in relation to the maxilla. an increased overbite and overjet. A Hawley plate with a screw was placed in the upper part and a lip bumper in the lower part, achieving the appropriate result of reducing the initial overjet, which is why it was the appropriate treatment for the patient. The best option for lip sucking treatment will be the Lip Bumper. It is a fixed and passive device that has an acrylic shield in the anterior sector, thus preventing the lip from entering between the upper and lower dental organs. This appliance favorably influences the development of the lower arch, separating the lip from the lower anterior teeth, producing a spontaneous expansion of said arch.
