Dental care in patients with iron deficiency anemia.

Introduction: Iron deficiency anemia is a disorder caused by iron deficiency that appears in multiple situations, the most common being lack of iron in the diet It can occur at any age, but it is more frequent in patients aged 12 to 23 months and women of reproductive age. Objective: To describe iron deficiency anemia, its characteristics as well as the dental approach in a pediatric patient. Description of the case: A 6-year-old female patient with a diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia was treated at the Pediatric Dentistry Specialty Clinic of the Autonomous University of Zacatecas, due to loss of a dental restoration. Upon examination, multiple carious lesions, root remains, in addition to pulpal necrosis and a fracture in the dental organ in which the restoration was dislodged, can be seen. It was decided to carry out a comprehensive treatment which included extractions, dental surgery and the use of appliances to maintain space. Blood count prior to the procedures was necessary to assess the patient's health. Conclusion: Iron deficiency anemia has different biological effects such as heavy bleeding and susceptibility to possible infections. It is necessary to carry out proper dental management and also good oral hygiene in these patients to avoid future complications.
