Lingual frenillectomy. Abstract: Ankyloglossia is a congenital anomaly characterized by a short insertion of a lingual frenulum. Here the tongue cannot protrude beyond the lower incisor teeth causing limitation of tongue movements and difficulty in pronouncing phonemes. Case report: An 8-year-old male patient attended the pediatric dentistry clinic of the ENES Leon. During the intraoral clinical examination, ankyloglossia was diagnosed due to the lack of tongue movement, causing difficulty in swallowing and phonation. Objectives: Surgical removal of the lingual frenulum to eradicate the problems derived from its anomalies. Return the proper functionality to the tongue movements, to generate an adequate swallowing and phonation. Conclusions: Lingual frenillectomy is a surgical correction process, which is indicated in patients who present difficulty in pronunciation and articulation of words, social and psychological disorders. In the case presented, the abnormal insertion of the tongue altered the mobility of the tongue and the articulation of words. Therefore, it was decided to perform excision of the lingual frenulum to restore and provide normal tongue function.
