Abstract

Introduction: In patients with early childhood caries it is common to find primary teeth with extensive coronary destruction. Chromium steel crowns have been the most commonly used alternative restoration for primary molars in recent years. A new alternative is the use of celluloid crowns filled with composite resin or glass ionomer. Case report: We report the case of three patients, one female patient aged 4 years and two male patients aged 5 years with a diagnosis of early childhood caries. Aesthetic restoration with celluloid crowns and occlusal caps is performed as an alternative of minimal intervention. In order to compare the materials, glass ionomer and composite resin were used as fillings to evaluate the periodontal response, resistance to fractures, loss of material, esthetics and ease of the procedure. Conclusions: Celluloid crowns are an excellent alternative for minimal intervention rehabilitation of primary molars, esthetic, easy to place and adapt, they show good periodontal response. Greater resistance and esthetics were observed in the crowns with resin filling but greater ease of procedure with glass ionomer. Advantages and disadvantages of the technique should be studied in the long term.
