Dental anomalies in pediatric patients from Kavanayén, Venezuela

Introduction: Dental anomalies result from alterations in odontogenesis, generating variations in size, shape, structure or number of teeth, being more prevalent in permanent dentition. Proyecto Mayū Foundation is an extension group of the Central University of Venezuela that holds specialized health care sessions. Objective: To describe the alterations in shape, number and eruption clinically observed in children and adolescents from the Pemón-Arekuna indigenous population of Kavanayén, Bolívar State - Venezuela. Project: During a medical-odontological session from Proyecto Mayū in Kavanayén, Bolívar State - Venezuela on April 2023, an epidemiological survey was carried out in which 179 patients were clinically evaluated, 102 girls and 77 boys, aged between 7 months and 17 years, recording shape, number and eruption anomalies. Alterations were identified in 8 patients, resulting in a prevalence of 4,47%: 1,12% for shape alterations, 1,12% for supernumerary teeth and 1,12% for agenesis. The prevalence of eruption alterations was 3,35%. Conclusions: The shape, number and dental eruption anomalies clinically evaluated in the Pemón-Arekuna indigenous population of Kavanayén presented a moderated prevalence. This prevalence may be underestimated since radiographic information was not available.
