Abstract

Introduction: Dental care for a child with autism spectrum disorder can present unique challenges due to sensory sensitivities, communication difficulties, changes in routines, challenging behaviors, oral hypersensitivity and motor coordination difficulties. However, with individualized care approaches, dentists can help provide effective dental care for these patients. Animal-assisted therapy can offer a variety of benefits for these patients, including reduced stress and anxiety, increased cooperation, improved mood, distraction during procedures, and promotion of communication and social interaction. Case presentation: We report the case of an 8-year-old boy with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), at high cariogenic risk and caries activity, with previous poor dental experiences, who is successfully adapted to dental care through animal-assisted therapy and successful treatment is achieved. Conclusion: The benefits of treatment based on individual patient needs can contribute to a more positive and successful dental experience for children, helping them to develop a more favorable attitude towards dental care and establish a solid foundation for oral health throughout their lives.
