Abstract

Introduction: The treatment of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) presents unique challenges in the field of dentistry, as these patients often experience sensory, communication and behavioural difficulties that can complicate dental care. Anxiety about dental visits is common among these children, which can result in difficulties in performing dental treatment effectively and without trauma. In this context, the progressive desensitisation technique emerges as a valuable tool in the care of these patients. Case report: School child, 6 years 11 months old, Frankl 2, Autistic Spectrum Disorder and history of social risk. First stage mixed dentition, high cariogenic risk, in caries activity (ceod 4/COPD 0). Gingivitis associated with bacterial plaque. Deviated midline and overbite. The treatment plan includes progressive desensitisation to dental care, preventive measures to control caries and gingival inflammation, as well as a rehabilitation phase and consultation with the orthodontic specialty. Conclusion: This case highlights the need for personalised care that is sensitive to the individual needs of patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder and high cariogenic risk in the context of paediatric dentistry, underlining the importance of prevention and early treatment to improve the quality of dental care.
