Abstract

Introduction: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may present food selectivity which could lead to malnutrition with a tendency to overweight or obesity, and preference for cariogenic, soft and adhesive foods. Case report: Patient 7 years 9 months, with obesity, seen in the pediatric dentistry clinic of the San Bernardo Health Center. He presents Autism Spectrum Disorder. Frankl 1 behavior. Intraoral examination shows multiple lesions of active cavities, gingivitis, soft and hard deposits. Referral to pediatrician, nutritionist, occupational therapy, preventive treatment with risk approach including dietary counseling, pediatric dentistry adaptation, fluoridation and hygiene instruction, controlling caries lesions clinically. Conclusion: Children with ASD may present particular eating behaviors, such as greater selectivity in their food, which may lead to nutritional problems, such as overweight and obesity in some cases. This indicates the need for nutritional surveillance and dietary guidance, with a special focus on the adequate distribution of nutrients to prevent the development of caries lesions and other systemic diseases.
