Challenges in the integral treatment of patients with ADHD
Keywords:
ADHD, Integral Dental CareAbstract
Introduction: ADHD is a condition that affects neurodevelopment, manifesting with patterns of hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity. It has a global prevalence of 5 to 8%. The integral treatment of these patients is a challenge for pediatric dentists due to the need for them to remain still and follow instructions for prolonged periods. This case illustrates an integral restorative treatment and its clinical management. Case Report: A 7-year-old school patient, Frankl behavior rating 2, diagnosed with ADHD and undergoing treatment with Aradix Retard 20 mg. He has a history of receiving care under general anesthesia in 2018. The patient presents multiple caries lesions, complicated coronal fracture, and gingivitis associated with dental plaque. Preventive and rehabilitative treatment was performed without the need for general anesthesia, including extractions and restorations. Various techniques were employed during his adaptation, including conventional methods, distractions, audiovisual aids, and reinforcement at home with dental tools. Conclusions: Patients with ADHD are known to be at high cariogenic risk, facing difficulties during dental care due to behavior management challenges, often leading to resistance from both parents and patients. It is crucial for our clinical practice to employ appropriate strategies to achieve treatment success and improve the prognosis for these children.
