Role of the dentist in the management of seizures in pediatric patients

Introduction: The care of pediatric dental patients at risk for seizures is increasingly common, but most dentists are unable to prevent, identify and manage a seizure emergency immediately and safely. Aim: Describe the role of the dentist in the outpatient management of seizure symptoms in pediatric patients during dental care and what is recommended in their preventive approach. Literature Review: There are several types of seizures, which are mainly treated with drugs associated with adverse effects and interactions with drugs. In the event of a seizure in the dental clinic, immediate actions must be initiated to protect the patient's integrity, which is why having the necessary knowledge and equipment in force is vital. Additionally, a detailed history of systemic conditions, treatments, and previous seizure characteristics is necessary to minimize risk. Patients with a seizure diagnosis usually present structural and physiological alterations that increase susceptibility to oral diseases, so their early identification allows for non-invasive preventive treatments. Conclusions: The dentist must be able to provide quality and safe care to patients and their families, reducing disparities in oral health. Recommendations: It is recommended that dental schools provide skills for the care of patients at risk of seizures with pediatric specifications to students; governments to take measures to correct the lack of professional preparation; and the dental community to carry out studies of higher scientific relevance to raise awareness and create protocols.
