Dental erosion in schoolchildren associated with the consumption of artificial sweeteners.

Introduction: Dental erosion is the irreversible loss of tooth enamel caused by acids that affects children and adolescents worldwide with a global prevalence of 30%. One of the main risk factors is due to the consumption of processed products that contain artificial sweeteners with a low pH. The diagnosis is through scales that classify the severity of the dental erosion observed. Its treatment is based on direct or indirect restorations. Objective: To carry out a review of the literature on dental erosion in schoolchildren associated with the consumption of artificial sweeteners. Literature review: An electronic search was carried out in PubMed, Web of science, SCIELO search engines, limiting it to 2020-2024. , with terms related to the research RESULTS The search identified 236 articles, only 19 met the inclusion criteria. Conclusion: The authors agree that the frequent intake of artificial sweeteners is a high risk for causing dental erosion. Recommendations: In Mexico, socioculturally and economically, there is no education adequate information on the risk that artificial sweeteners cause in children and adolescents, to reduce the prevalence it is proposed that the government be stricter in regulating the labeling of products with a high content of artificial sweeteners, promoting the serious damage they cause to oral and the importance of reducing its availability and consumption at home, schools and recreational centers.
