Comprehensive pediatric dentistry: a holistic approach through teamwork
Keywords:

Introduction: In pediatric dentistry, the holistic approach recognizes the child as an integral being whose well-being depends on the interaction of factors such as oral health, general health, emotional aspects, and lifestyle habits. Ankyloglossia, an alteration of the lingual frenulum, can affect oral function, speech development, mastication, and swallowing. Pediatric dental treatment, complemented by speech-language therapy, enables the implementation of approaches that integrate the perspectives and expertise of both fields. Case presentation: A 10-year-old female patient attended the postgraduate pediatric dentistry clinic for the evaluation of her maxillary canines, which were in an ectopic position. Examination revealed a short lingual frenulum, limited tongue elevation and protrusion, and difficulty pronouncing certain phonemes. Based on the clinical findings, a frenectomy was performed, followed by referral to speech-language therapy. Conclusions: A holistic approach in pediatric dentistry yields better clinical outcomes. In this case, the surgical intervention resolved the anatomical limitation, while speech-language therapy improved tongue function and speech articulation. This case demonstrates that integrating pediatric dentistry and speech-language therapy provides a more comprehensive and effective approach to the treatment of lingual frenulum alterations.
