Abstract

Introduction. Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is an orthopedic procedure used to correct transverse discrepancies in the maxilla, which affect between 8% and 16% of the population. The expansion device produces orthopedic forces that facilitate movement of the circummaxillary sutures, although complete ossification can take 3 to 6 months. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), a non-thermal technique, stimulates mitochondrial photoreceptors, increases ATP production, and reduces oxidative stress, promoting osteoblastic and osteoclastic activity. Objective. To determine the benefits of using LLLT in RME in the pediatric population. Review. A sample of seven scientific studies, including clinical trials and literature reviews, conducted between 2015 and 2025, was selected using the PubMed platform as a search engine. Results. The results of the studies are mixed, with one group showing no changes, favorable or not, from the application of LBP during MRE, while others show a positive influence and greater and better benefits from applying LBP. Conclusion. The integration of LBP into MRE protocols could not only optimize the efficacy of the procedure but also promote faster and more predictable bone regeneration, thus improving the functional and aesthetic results of the treatment. Recommendations. The creation of a standardized protocol based on scientific evidence is necessary for the correct application of LBP and to achieve the desired changes.
