Abstract

Managing fear and anxiety in the dental field remains a challenge despite technical advances. The use of nitrous oxide, known as laughing gas, has been identified as a solution to provide a less traumatic experience. Since its first use in 1884 by Horace Wells, this gas has grown in popularity among pediatric dentists in the United States. Objective To determine the advantages of nitrous oxide in pediatric dentistry for minimal sedation. Review This colorless gas is an effective analgesic and anxiolytic that acts quickly, with no harmful effects on the respiratory system. Characteristics of Nitrous Oxide Does not irritate the airways. Does not cause respiratory depression. Clinical effect in 3 to 5 minutes. 99% elimination via the lungs. Patient Selection. The evaluation should include a complete medical history, and patients are classified according to the ASA system. Conclusions Nitrous oxide is a safe and well-tolerated option for managing anxiety and pain in pediatric patients, allowing for their cooperation during dental procedures.
