Abstract

Introduction: Providing dental care to pediatric patients with hearing loss requires a specialized approach to ensure effective communication. Sign language is the primary means of communication for individuals with hearing loss. Objective:
To provide a practical guide for pediatric dentists on how to care for patients with hearing loss, highlighting the importance of Mexican Sign Language (LSM) and inclusive communication. Review:
Dental care protocols for patients with hearing loss emphasize that knowledge of LSM is essential for effective communication. A lack of training among pediatric dentists in Deaf culture can lead to significant challenges, such as the ineffectiveness of behavioral management techniques like "tell-show-do," and poor communication with deaf parents. This often results in children acting as interpreters, which can negatively impact their childhood experience and lead to unclear or inadequate preventive guidance. Conclusion:
Promoting inclusion and accessibility in dental care for pediatric patients with hearing loss is essential to ensure effective communication during consultations. Recommendations: Pediatric dentists should be familiar with care protocols for patients with hearing loss and participate in LSM training programs to ensure inclusive and effective communication.
