Importance of multidisciplinary treatment in patients with disabilities (ASD): case report

Abstract

Introduction: The prevalence of autismspectrumdisorder (ASD) has increased over the years. Characterized by communication and social interaction difficulties, as well as repetitive and restricted patterns of behaviors and interests. The multidisciplinary approach is a pillar for dental care. Objective: to raise the importance of comprehensive treatment to restore the health of the ASD patient. Case report: Signed informed consent. School patient, 8 years 6 months, ASD, Epilepsy,Chromosome 3p25 deletion, low weight, behavior 2 Frankl. Mixed dentition first stage, high cariogenic risk, in caries activity. Sensory aversion to food. In dental care since the age of 4 years. In 2019 under general anesthesia sealants, exodontia, pulpectomies and fillings were performed. In 2020 a sealant in tooth 3.6. In 2021 VI sealants in upper permanent incisors and obturation of tooth 8.4. In addition to the panoramic radiographic finding of deep dentin caries in teeth 2.6 and 4.6 with indication for extraction in the ward under general anesthesia once body weight increases.Discussion: the multidisciplinary management of the ASD child allows controlling his general and oral health and, consequently, his psychoemotional state. At the oral level, specialties of speech therapy and occupational therapy will complement oral stimulation and desensitization and positioning of the child in the chair to contribute to the success of the treatment. Conclusion: the control of all areas of the child with ASD allows for support in other therapies in which he/she participates and to be informed about his/her general health status. It is essential to have committed and cooperative parents.
