Abstract

Introduction: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, of multifactorial etiology, where the main characteristics are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, causing losses in social, academic and functional progress. The objective is to raise awareness and promote oral hygiene education for parents and/or caregivers to carry out self-care actions and comprehensive rehabilitation of the child's oral cavity. Case report: 10-year-old male patient, mother's history of obstetrics and gynecology (preeclampsia) with a 30-week cesarean section due to complications, diagnosed with ADHD in the third year of life. On oral examination he presented with HMI, gingival disease, and high-risk dental caries. The approach consisted of preventive treatments, remineralization, extractions of multiple teeth and apexification through behavioral management with the use of the tell-show-do technique, modeling, distraction and positive reinforcement. Conclusion: The comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach is essential for success in the treatment and maintenance of the oral health of children with ADHD. The combination of dental treatments, behavioral management and parent education is key to achieving positive results and improving the patient's quality of life.
