Abstract

Introduction: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most frequent neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood, occurring in up to 12% of the child population worldwide. ADHD is characterized by manifestations of hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity, as well as sleep disturbances and impaired executive functions. Stomatologically they are susceptible to a high rate of caries, periodontal disease and bruxism, among others. Objective: To raise awareness of the importance of comprehensive treatment and behavioral management in the dental office in pediatric patients with ADHD. Case Presentation: A 7 year old male patient with a diagnosis of ADHD currently in treatment, Frankl II, came for dental care and evaluation. The diagnosis and protocol for behavioral management consisted of classical conditioning, operant and coping techniques, combined with a minimally invasive stomatological approach. Conclusion: The result was satisfactory, the patient achieved a change in his behavior going from a Frankl II to a Frankl IV, decreasing his anxiety level, controlling his emotions and structuring his learning about the stomatological consultation, which was reflected positively during his preventive and restorative treatment, managing to awaken his interest and attachment to the care of his oral health. Without forgetting the importance of a multi and interdisciplinary approach to oral health care.
